“‘Enabling’ is essentially any action that makes it easier for the addict to pursue his addiction. It’s an unwitting, well-meaning, but nonetheless destructive response to a loved one’s addictive behavior.” –From the book, House of Cards, published by Tyndale House Publishers. © 2001.

Addiction is a family disease. If one of your parents, like my father, was an addict, the chances that you or one of your siblings becomes an addict increases greatly. Addiction is also a degenerative disease that if not properly treated, worsens over time, and, ultimately leads to premature death. When an addict is deep in the…

A tribute to George Floyd circa June 2020.

It was 2020, but some eyes weren’t open

I can’t breathe anymore, the system is broken

I used to be the model minority, the token

But when they murdered Big George, my word must be spoken

Keep the cameras rolling, cause our lives are being stolen

By no-knock warrants and don’t forget Robbie Tolan,

Black Lives Matter, this is our moment

I see the opponents, if you ain’t one, it’s time to show it

Because it’s not just Minnesota, it’s Tulsa, Oklahoma

It’s redlining, the War on Drugs, suppressing voters

It’s stop and frisk, racial profiling, police quotas

Riot squads and turning police into soldiers

I had a dream that this was over, but then I got sober

To keep my composure, for this activism supernova

And when it’s all over, you can say you stood with me

Hands up, don’t shoot, on the right side of history…

“In a culture increasingly unable to distinguish between available data and reliable information, more and more Americans will think themselves justified in holding beliefs which have no basis in fact.” Brad Hirschfeld, Fox News Op-Ed, May 7, 2015.

The title of this story might strike you as absurd. But for over 100 million Americans, the title has become their truth. In fact, over 100 million Americans believe that Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, and a group of Satan-worshipping elites are running a child-sex ring that controls our media and politics. https://www.ipsos.com/en-us/news-polls/npr-misinformation-123020. …

“Without mental health, there can be no true physical health.” -Dr. Brock Chisholm.

In August 2018, I took third place at the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation (IBJJF) Masters (age 30 and above) World Championships; submitted an opponent with a toe hold at Fight 2 Win 84 (the foremost professional jiu-jitsu event), and took first place at the IBJJF Chicago Open in the span of 14 days. At Masters Worlds, I weighed in at 136 pounds. I was down nearly 70 pounds from the day I started training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. I was, as the proverbial saying goes, in the best shape of my life. Or so I thought.

I may have looked healthy in 2018, but because I hadn’t addressed my mental health, I was far from healthy.

Two parallel events, which would have…

“Mama, mama many worlds I’ve come since I first left home…” -Grateful Dead

I am a “Boat Person.” I am a refugee. I am an immigrant. I am Vietnamese. I am an American. I am an Ohioan. I am a Californian. I am a Chicagoan.

The Herald-Star of Steubenville, Ohio wrote a story on my family, circa 1984.

I am an elementary school math whiz. I am a Spelling Bee champion. I am a Little Leaguer. I am an involuntary Catholic. I am a reluctant altar boy. I am a militant atheist.

I am a mediocre high school football player. I am a better wrestler. I am a student of the game. I am a high school football coach. I am a brown belt in Brazilian…

By the age of 46, Tony Hsieh had achieved everything a stereotypical Asian-American parent desires for their child: he graduated from Harvard with a degree in computer science, he was the CEO of a multi-billion-dollar online company, he had many friends, and he was seen as a guardian angel by struggling companies during the pandemic that took the world over in 2020.

Tony Hsieh was “a visionary CEO” who focused on “delivering happiness.”

However, his untimely death on November 27-due to injuries sustained in a house fire- revealed that Hsieh also suffered from something else afflicting many Asian-Americans: an untreated mental health illness. Hsieh’s mantra was delivering “happiness” and bringing people…

Last night, the NFL season opened amid racial turmoil and a global pandemic. Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri will be one of only two stadiums to allow fans to attend games this season. And, in response to the #BlackLivesMatter momentum from the recent high-profile cases of police brutality in this country, the NFL has decided to play the “Black National Anthem” before every game. …

Black women are so unprotected & we hold so many things in to protect the feelings of others [without] considering our own…” — Megan Thee Stallion

On July 12, Megan Thee Stallion was the victim of domestic violence at the hands of her boyfriend, Tory Lanez. TMZ initially reported that she had suffered foot injuries as the result of stepping on broken glass. However, what is likely is that she was shot in both of her feet by Lanez, who has been arrested and charged with carrying a concealed weapon in his vehicle.

The response to the incident from some…

“I’m just different.” -Elijah McClain

White people calling the police on their Black neighbors for mundane activities is nothing new. These calls are oftentimes motivated by implicit racial bias that the caller is unaware of. If the police respond to the call, they could be engaging in “profiling by proxy.” (Sgt. Jeremiah Johnson, policing practitioner and researcher with the Darien Police Department in Connecticut).

Following a viral incident at a Starbucks in Philadelphia in 2018 where the police were called on two Black men for literally just sitting and waiting for a friend, over 150 police departments across the country…

“Just because I can beat someone in jiu-jitsu…doesnt mean that I’m a better person.” -Jocko Willink.

In January 2014, I went for a yearly check-up as part of the IVF protocol Lauren and I were going through at the time. Part of the check-up was a blood draw. However, when the nurse attempted to draw my blood, she couldn’t-there was not enough blood flow for a proper sample. I was severely dehydrated and instructed to come back the next day.

At the age of 34, I was in the worst shape of my life. I weighed 205 pounds (for frame…
